What to look out for
• How have the stones been set? Are they glued or prong-set? Pieces with glued stones will be cheaper than those that have been prong-set. The latter uses small spikes of metal to hold the stones in place
in much the same way as fine jewellery and as a result has been more intricately designed and constructed.
Look for quality? Is the piece pleasing to the eye? Examine the stones – multifaceted stones and the combination of different cuts denote quality.
Is the piece signed? Turn it over. Many of the best pieces were almost as intricately designed on the back as they were on the front and will bear the name of the designer who created them.


• Names to note: Trifari particularly anything from the 1940s; Miriam Haskell; Stanley Hagler; Christian Dior; Elsa Shiaparelli; Joseff of Hollywood; Chanel; Kenneth Jay Lane and many more.
